The Challenge
Cytopia is a fast growing publicly listed biotechnology company based in Melbourne. After making several breakthroughs in their cancer research and as part of their expansion strategy they purchased an American research operation based in New York.
Cytopia needed to expand their operations to the new offices and to cater to an increasingly mobile workforce while insuring their primary business asset, their research, was maintained safe and secure at all times. Due to the nature of Cytopia’s work security was of the utmost importance, protecting the results of their research work and their IP.
Cytopia’s challenge was to integrate the New York office so that the researchers could work seamlessly with each other as if they where sitting in the next room. This would allow all users to share data and other resources regardless of physical location. Cytopia wanted to hold virtual conferences that allowed molecular modelling to be viewed on the screens of all participants regardless of their physical location. Employees required access to log into the company network from any location including home, hotel or office with high end security.
Orstead’s Solution
Cytopia engaged Orstead's
Network Design & Installation service. Orstead
created a network between the two offices, Melbourne
and New York, via a completely secure encrypted
Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN establishes
a secure tunnel between two private networks, the
office network in Melbourne and the office network
in New York, using a public network as the tunnel.
In this case the public network is the internet. All data that moves through this tunnel is completely encrypted and secure while it passes over the internet. As far as the computers on either side of the tunnel are concerned communications between the two offices take place as if they are next to each other.
A security token system was used to provide high end security each time a Cytopia staff member logged into the network remotely. Staff are issued with their own security token, which is small enough to attach to a key ring. The security token generates a unique authentication id that is used to identify the staff member each time they log into the network from a location other than the office.
Business Benefits
Our cost effective solution allows sharing of expertise and IP across the two offices, maximizing the return on the investment in the New York office. By using the internet as the tunnel between the two offices and encrypting the data as it moves through the internet, Cytopia has avoided the significant cost of a dedicated international leased line between the Melbourne and New York offices or the relocation of the New York office to Melbourne.
