The Challenge
Bilfinger Berger Project Investments is a major player in the development and operation of social and transport infrastructure around the world, actively operating across three continents. Their Australian offices are located in Sydney and Melbourne. The international nature of the business requires they are able to operate around the clock.
Due to the global nature of the business Bilfinger Berger Project Investments was incurring extensive travel costs. A solution was required that allowed the global offices to operate in a common virtual environment, allowing for the sharing of staff and resources without incurring the expense of physically relocating employees.
Over the years there had been numerous attempts by other providers to implement a global video conferencing system, whereby the Australian offices could communicate with the international offices. It wasn’t until Bilfinger Berger Project Investments engaged Orstead that a solution was successfully implemented.
Implementing the solution required Orstead staff liaising with the international offices and several international third party suppliers.
Orstead’s Solution
Orstead’s Network Design
& Installation service was engaged to implement
the video conferencing solution. Orstead technicians
coordinated with all the Bilfinger Berger Project
Investments offices located globally, establishing
a common format for transmission of data, including
voice.
Orstead technicians then built a global VPN architecture. The VPN allowed every office to take part in the video conference within the confines of the global firewall systems. Operating within the firewall prevents unauthorized users from accessing the video conference system and ensures the data transmission is fully encrypted to prevent eavesdropping.
Business Benefits
Bilfinger Berger Project Investments is now able to attend meetings with internationally based staff. Senior Staff are able to participate in global strategic meetings.
They are able to gain the benefit of experience available in offices located oversees. Regular meetings between project management staff have increased local staff’s exposure to international skills. It has provided ready access to international IP and as a result boosted the skills of the local staff.
Within Australia they can hold video conferences between the state offices. The meetings are held a number of times a week.
They are able to interview potential staff based in London and other financial centres based internationally.
All of the benefits have been obtained at a fraction of the cost incurred had the meetings been held in physical locations around the world. Due to the prohibitive cost the meetings would not have occurred on such a regular basis. The benefits of skill transfer would not have been realized.
